No East Strides

A thousand miles to a land of promise
We were never promised much
Smoked filled car
The third seat facing backwards
A baby in his mother’s clutch

Through a child’s eyes… so much mystery
A mother’s eyes see change
A father only sees a new start
Everyone else sees strange

Thrown in a pit
With only a shovel
Trying to dig ourselves out
The dirt was more
Than most could handle
Our survival left in doubt
No easy strides
No easy answers
No one to explain what it was all about

We scratched and clawed
Fought and cried
Determined to beat the odds
A land with so much promise
We never realized our plan was flawed
No one told us any different
Our trust in fate and God
Hope that neither would abandon us
Though some claimed both were frauds

Thrown in a pit
With only a shovel
Trying to dig ourselves out
The dirt was more
Than most could handle
Our survival left in doubt
No easy strides
No easy answers
No one to explain what it was all about

Some of us managed to dig ourselves out
Some never left that pit
I thank God for never leaving my side
For my fate and the strength to trust it
I pray for all those left behind
And simply chose to quit

…. No easy strides
…. No easy answers
No one to explain what it was all about
I thank God every night
…. Some of us figured it out
