Santino

There’s an old man trying out his new bike
He’s as proud as he can be
Two shiny baskets
One on the front
One on the back
Looks to be about sixty-three

Doing circles in the parking lot
Having a wonderful day
A new Audi drives up…
Honks his horn, waves his arms
The old man’s in his way

What makes people so miserable?
What makes them so mean?
How come few ever smile anymore?
Is it where they’re going?
Or perhaps it’s where they’ve been?

Some kids are playing in the schoolyard
Trying out their new toys
An old man yells… he’s calling the cops
They’re making too much noise

What makes people so miserable?
What makes them so mean?
How come few ever smile anymore?
Is it where they’re going?
Or perhaps it’s where they’ve been?

Santino was a humanitarian
Delivering aid in Sudan
Seven decided one day… to take his life
For supplies carried in his van

…. Santino was a good man

He would have loved the kids in the park
He would have loved the old man on his bike
He would have loved a world with choices
He would have loved to know what that’s like

…. Santino was a fine man

I suppose everyone has their reasons
For what makes them so mean
…. Maybe it’s where they’re going
…. Or perhaps it’s where they’ve been
