Back Then

I remember when finding someone
Didn’t involve a website
Thinking love should last forever
Now I’m content with one night

I remember when we didn’t lock our doors
Everyone walked right in
TV only had a few channels
Oh, but things were so different back then

Back then… it was ok to show respect
Back then… you knew just what to expect
A friendly smile, courtesy was in style
Our neighbors were our friends
Oh, things were different back then

The base was blasting
A heavy thumping sound
Someone stepped in my way
I just walked around

… All I needed
Was a little space
Back then it didn’t matter
What colour or race
I would have knocked that smirk
Right off of his face

But that was back then…
Things were so different back then

Back then… it was ok to show respect
Back then… you knew just what to expect
A friendly smile, courtesy was in style
Our neighbors were our friends
Oh, things were different back then

We bought things
From people we knew by name
Willing to pay a little bit more
Things just aren’t the same

I remember school yards
Full of happy faces
No one fearing for their lives
Guns locked up in safe places
Christmas was a special time… kids went outside to play
Oh how things were different back then

The world is forever changing
But every now and again
I remind myself to stay out of its’ way?
And think about life back then
…. How things were so different back then
